I am not entirely sure how to define this work. I guess you
can call it an experimental documentary. My Great
Grandfather, Grandfather, filmed my family’s lineage and
their travels from the turn of the 19th century to the 1970s.
My father then continued this effort by filming my
childhood. My grandparents past away 4 years ago
and throughout my college years not being able to
be there during their final years bothered me. It was
three years after their death that I discovered the
footage. The footage was around 6 hours
long and not only captured my grandfather and father’s
childhood and upbringing but also their travels
around the world. What I thought was a lineage of
danish businessmen turned out to be artists who gave up
their dreams to conform to the times and obligations
they had. Growing up my grandfather would always talk
to me about his travels and now to have this form of
context to his life is an extreme privilege. It only
made sense to do something with and carry this film
onward. My grandparents, especially my grandfather,
were why I pursued anything creative in the first
place. Every drawing I made as a child he kept in a
frame. One of the few regrets I live with to this day
would be that I didn’t give him enough drawings to
frame. This is only a rough cut.
